Hand Ranking | Which Hand Beats What?
The best hand is a ROYAL FLUSH. This can be in any suit (hearts, clubs, spades, diamonds) and is comprised of the Ace, King, Queen, Jack, and Ten – all of the same suit.
A STRAIGHT FLUSH is next. 5 cards in succession in any suit. Ace, 2, 3, 4, 5 of the same suit, or 7, 8, 9, 10, Jack of the same suit, and so on – any 5. The Ace can be used as higher than the King, or as “1”. If more than one straight flush in the game, the one with highest top card wins.
QUADS, or 4-of-a-kind is the 3rd highest hand. Four of the same numbered or face cards count. So, 3 of spades, 3 of clubs, 3 of hearts and 3 of diamonds is QUADS. Same with four Jacks or any other card. When another player has QUADS, the higher numbered card wins.
A FULL HOUSE is the 4th highest hand. 3 of a kind and 2 of a kind makes a FULL HOUSE. For instance, AAA 22, or 222 33, or 99 JJJ.
A FLUSH is 5th highest. This consists of 5 cards all of the same suit. So any five hearts or diamonds or clubs or spades. Like 2, 3, 8, 9, K of hearts is a flush. When two or more players also have flushes, the highest card determines the winner. When both have the same top card, they tie and split the pot.
A STRAIGHT is the 6th highest hand. This is 5 cards in succession – of any suits. So, a 2 of diamonds, 3 clubs, 4 spades, 5 spades, and 6 hearts is a straight. In case of two or more straights, the highest top card in the straight wins the hand. There may be ties.
3-OF-A-KIND is the 7th highest hand. This means 3 of any kind, regardless of suit. Like three 3’s, three 8’s, or three Aces. Ties are broken by who has the highest card.
2 PAIR is the 8th highest hand. This is two pair of any kinds. Like two Aces and two 5’s, or two 3’s and two 4’s. Ties are broken by highest card.
2-OF-A-KIND is the 9th highest hand. Any two of the same kind of card qualifies. Ties are broken with the highest card.
1 PAIR is the 10th highest hand. In almost all hands, someone will have at least one pair. One pair is just two of the same kind of card. Two 8’s or two Tens or Two Queens are all 1PAIR hands. Ties are broken by highest card.
If no player has one of the hands above then TOP CARD may be used. The ACE is the top card, followed by the King, Queen, Jack, Ten, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2. No suit is higher than any other suit, so ties are not broken, they both split the pot.
